Panama is known for its interoceanic canal, 79.6 km long, which consists of three sets of locks (Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and Gatun). The canal crosses the country so boats can go by water from the Caribbean Sea (Atlantic Ocean) to the Pacific Ocean and vice versa, without bypassing South America from the south of Chile and not go around the world.
The Panama Canal, formerly American Panama Canal, is now a major source of funding for the State of Panama. One of the specificities of the country at the political level is that it has waived having a strong army in favor of protecting the environment. It is also the country where the largest proportion is protected by national parks.
Panama is a parliamentary republic. The vote is granted to all citizens over eighteen years. It is not compulsory to vote.
Panama has the strongest economy in Central America. The country owes most of its economic growth to the Panama Canal. Panama City is the largest financial center in Central America.
Spanish is the only official language, legacy of Spanish colonization, but a significant portion of the population also speaks English. The currency is U.S. Dollars.
